India and Germany belong to the group of leading innovating nations in selected high-tech sectors. Research conducted by the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management at TUHH shows that the competence profiles of the business and science sectors of both countries have complementarities, which have not been sufficiently utilized so far.

This online event will explore the potentials for Indo-German cooperation through selected successful practical examples, high-calibre expert talks and a panel discussion. Some of the questions it will focus upon are:

  • Why does it make sense for India and Germany to cooperate in the field of high-tech, e.g. hydrogen power?
  • What are the opportunities that German firms see in an innovation partnership with India?
  • Why do Indian companies engage in R&D and innovation in Germany? What are their experiences?

Die Corona-Krise befeuert den seit Jahren schwelenden Systemkonflikt zwischen demokratischen und autoritären Staaten. Die Debatte um die Leistungsfähigkeit demokratischer und autoritärer Systeme entzündete sich vor allem an China, das als wirtschaftlich erfolgreiche, technologisch voranschreitende und machtpolitisch ambitionierte Autokratie die vermeintliche Überlegenheit westlicher Demokratien, ihrer Werte und ihrer offenen Marktwirtschaften in Frage stellt. Durch Covid-19 erlebt dieser Systemwettbewerb noch einmal eine neue Relevanz und Zuspitzung. Steuert die Welt nach der Gesundheits- und Wirtschaftskrise womöglich auch in eine harte Auseinandersetzung politischer Systeme oder gar in einen neuen Kalten Krieg? Darüber hinaus wird auch die Frage nach vielversprechenden Innovationsansätzen relevant: Wie können Unternehmen und andere Akteure innovative Lösungen im Sinne der „erschwinglichen Exzellenz“ entwickeln, die im Einklang mit den Nachhaltigkeitszielen sind und der langfristigen Existenzsicherung von Unternehmen dienen.

In dieser Situation braucht Deutschland eine breite gesellschaftliche Debatte über die Auswirkungen der Pandemie und die Welt nach COVID-19: Zu dieser Debatte möchte die Bertelsmann Stiftung gemeinsam mit dem GIRT Hamburg und dem Center for Frugal Innovation der TU Hamburg in einem digitalen Werkstattgespräch beitragen. Wir wollen mit Ihnen diskutieren wie sich der Systemkonflikt auf Deutschland auswirkt und welche Handlungsnotwendigkeiten und -möglichkeiten sich für Unternehmen daraus ergeben. Welche Potenziale dabei eine Zusammenarbeit mit Indien – einem anerkannten Leitmarkt für frugale Innovationen – besitzt und wie sich diese ausschöpfen lassen, ist ebenfalls Gegenstand der Diskussionen.

„India. What’s next?“: GIRT Hamburg lädt zur nächsten Veranstaltung am 26. August 2019

Indien produziert Schlagzeilen, und zwar nicht nur aufgrund von jüngsten politischen Maßnahmen im Bundestaat Jammu und Kaschmir (J&K). Zum ersten Mal seit mehreren Jahrzehnten wurde in Indien bei der größten demokratischen Wahlübung der Welt eine amtierende Regierung mit einer vollen – und sogar erhöhten – Mehrheit wieder ins Amt gewählt.

Viele Experten interpretieren die klare Mehrheit für das Regierungsbündnis als ein eindeutiges Mandat für Premierminister Narendra Modi, weitreichende Reformen im Land durchzuführen. PM Modi hat bereits seine Vision angekündigt, Indien in den nächsten fünf Jahren zu einer Volkswirtschaft mit einem BIP von 5 Billionen Dollar zu machen. Um diese Vision zu verwirklichen, sind erhebliche Reformen erforderlich, insbesondere angesichts der Berichte über eine Abschwächung des Wirtschaftswachstums. Andererseits erlebt das Land viele Innovationen und macht Fortschritte bei und mit der Digitalisierung. Die jüngsten Schritte der Regierung für eine vollständige nationale Integration von Jammu & Kaschmir dürften mittel- bis langfristig auch erhebliche Auswirkungen auf das Geschäfts- und Regulierungsumfeld haben.

Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Entwicklungen laden wir Sie zu unserem nächsten Treffen ein, das am 26. August 2019 um 18 Uhr in den Räumlichkeiten von Taylor Wessing (Hanseatic Trade Center, Am Sandtorkai 41, 20457 Hamburg) stattfinden wird.

  • Das Treffen beginnt mit einer kurzen Begrüßung durch die Gastgeber Philipp Behrendt (Taylor Wessing) und Dr. Rajnish Tiwari (GIRT Hamburg).
  • Seine Exzellenz, Herr Madan Lal Raigar, Indiens Generalkonsul in Hamburg, wird als Ehrengast eine Begrüßungsansprache halten.
  • Nach einer kurzen Übersicht über die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung der letzten Jahre wird ein Expertenvortrag (Keynote) folgen. Die Keynote der Veranstaltung wird von Frau Iris Winkler, einer bekannten Indien-Expertin und Senior Managerin bei PwC, gehalten. Frau Winkler gibt Einblicke in das neue Investitionsszenario in Indien. Sie wird auch die wichtigsten politische und regulatorische Maßnahmen hervorheben, die die neue Regierung in ihrem jüngsten Haushalt eingeführt hat und welche für Investitionsvorhaben möglicherweise große Bedeutung besitzen.

Die bilinguale Veranstaltung ist als Austauschplattform für eine rege und produktive Diskussion mit den Vortragenden aber auch mit und unter den Teilnehmenden angedacht.

Es folgt eine Networking-Möglichkeit bei Snacks und einem majestätischen Blick auf die Elbphilharmonie. Die Veranstaltung wird freundlicherweise von Taylor Wessing unterstützt.

India is making headlines. Moreover, it is making news not only for the recent political decisions involving recent policy measures in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). For the first time in several decades, a sitting government has been returned to office in India with a full – and even increased – majority, in the largest democratic electoral exercise of the world.

Many experts interpret the clear majority for the ruling alliance as a direct mandate for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to undertake far-reaching reforms in the country. PM Modi has already announced his vision to turn India into a $5 trillion economy by 2024.

Significant reforms are needed to achieve this vision, especially in the face of reports of a slowdown in the economy. On the other hand, the country is witnessing many innovations and is making progress with digitalization.

The recent steps taken by the government for a full national integration of Jammu & Kashmir are also likely to have significant implications for the business and regulatory environment in the medium to long run.

It is in the backdrop of these developments that we invite you to our next meeting, which will be held on August 26, 2019 at 6 PM in the premises of Taylor Wessing.

  • The meeting will begin with a brief welcome by Dr. Philipp Behrendt, Partner at Taylor Wessing and and by Dr. Rajnish Tiwari, Head of GIRT Hamburg.
  • His Excellence, Mr. Madan Lal Raigar, India’s Consul General in Hamburg, will grace the occasion as the guest of honour and deliver a welcome address.
  • The main keynote at the event will be by Ms. Iris Winkler, a well-noted India expert and Senior Manager at PwC. Ms. Winkler will provide new insights on the latest investment scenario in India. She will also highlight some important policy measures introduced by the new government in its recent budget and the changes associated with them for investors.

This will be followed by a networking opportunity over snacks and a majestic view across the Elbphilharmony. The event is kindly supported by Taylor Wessing.

GIRT Hamburg invites to its next meeting on Sept. 13, 2018

GIRT Hamburg and PwC join hands to organize an event to present results of recent studies of patterns in inwards and outwards FDI between India and Germany

Foreign direct investments (FDI) between India and Germany have been growing steadily. As per the official Bundesbank data, the consolidated stock of German FDI in India grew more than five-folds between 2006 and 2016: from €2.9 billion to €15.9 billion.[1] Today more than 600 German companies employ over 300,000 people in India and generate annual revenues worth €32 billion, which does not show in the trade statistics. Similarly, close to 100 Indian companies have invested €3.5 billion in Germany. They employ more than 20,000 people and generate annual revenues worth €11 billion in Germany.

So far, however, little information is publically available about the current patterns of German FDI in India, and vice versa, concerning the drivers of FDI, regional distribution and its effects on the host economy. German-Indian Round Table (GIRT) Hamburg is pleased to hold an event in cooperation with PwC Hamburg to shed more light on this and share this valuable knowledge with the interested firms, policy makers, media and individuals.

The event will begin with a brief welcome by Mr. Frank Quassowsky, Partner at PwC and Head of PwC’s India-German Business Group and by Dr. Rajnish Tiwari, Head of GIRT Hamburg.

The introductory words of the hosts shall be followed by a welcome address by India’s Consul General in Hamburg, Mr. Madan Lal Raigar, who will grace the event as chief guest.
